Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs), led by Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, staged a protest in the Parliament House complex on Tuesday. They addressed the alleged theft of donations destined for the Ram temple in Ayodhya and condemned the police’s actions against student protesters.
The protest unfolded in front of the Makar Dwar of Parliament, where MPs carried placards and chanted slogans such as ‘chhanda chor, gaddi chor’ and ‘Amit Shah jawaab do’ to express their discontent with the government.
To symbolize the purported theft, protesting MPs brought donation boxes and stood around them, raising their voices against those in power. Some MPs even placed cash in the boxes to illustrate the donations made and the alleged subsequent theft.
Besides Priyanka Gandhi, several prominent leaders participated in the demonstration, including Dimple Yadav and Dharmendra Yadav from the Samajwadi Party (SP), Sagarika Ghose from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), and RJD’s Sanjay Yadav and Manoj Jha, along with RSP’s NK Premchandran.
The backdrop of the protest featured a large banner reading ‘Why Amit Shah absent from Parliament’, aiming to hold the Home Minister accountable for the ongoing issues.
The INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties, has pledged to confront the government over allegations of donation theft from the Ram temple and to protest the violent police response to student demonstrations that occurred last week.
Leaders from the INDIA bloc convened in the chamber of Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, to strategize their approach, reinforcing their commitment to raising concerns over the issues of “chhanda chori” and the excessive use of force against students.
The protest signifies a growing unrest among the opposition against the government’s handling of both the financial misconduct alleged at the Ram temple and the treatment of student protesters. Observers note that the coordination among opposition parties, especially in the run-up to the elections, may redefine parliamentary dynamics.
