Kirrikin to Showcase Indigenous Australian Fashion in Delhi

On October 28, the Indigenous Australian fashion label Kirrikin will debut in Delhi, marking a significant milestone in Australia-India creative collaboration. This fashion showcase represents a powerful celebration of innovation, cultural heritage, and the resilience of Australia’s First Nations peoples.

The Australian High Commission, in partnership with Kirrikin and the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), organizes this landmark event. It highlights the stunning artistry and craftsmanship inherent in First Nations Australian fashion.

Kirrikin, founded by Amanda Healy, a Wonnarua woman, transforms hand-painted Indigenous artwork into contemporary luxury clothing. Each piece reflects a deep respect for cultural narratives while remaining fashionable. Healy’s vision for Kirrikin encompasses not only the revitalization of Indigenous languages but also a celebration of cultural identity through design.

As part of the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA), the Kirrikin label symbolizes the strengthening creative and commercial ties between the two nations. Designed in Australia and crafted in Noida, India, the collection bridges geographical gaps and cultural divides.

The brand name “Kirrikin,” derived from the Wonnarua language, translates to “Sunday’s best clothes”. This name pays homage to the cyclical relationship between fashion and tradition, emphasizing the brand’s mission to promote Indigenous stories through art and design.

Philip Green, the Australian High Commissioner to India, described the event as “a powerful celebration of the creativity, resilience, and cultural richness of Australia’s First Nations peoples.” He added, “Kirrikin’s journey exemplifies the strength of trade and cultural exchange under the Australia-India partnership, and we are proud to bring their designs to the Delhi runway in collaboration with FDCI.”

Reflecting on the collaboration, Amanda Healy stated, “Celebrating this partnership with the Australian High Commission and FDCI is a proud moment for Kirrikin. Bringing First Nations fashion, art, and storytelling to India is an honour.”

Sunil Sethi, Chairman of the FDCI, highlighted that this partnership introduces “fresh perspectives to Indian fashion while celebrating the artistry and storytelling of Australian First Nations communities.” He asserted that “fashion has always been a bridge — and this event is a true meeting of cultures.”

Moreover, Swati Dave, Chair of the Advisory Board at the Centre for Australia-India Relations, shared insights on the importance of supporting First Nations businesses like Kirrikin. She stated, “This showcase is a powerful way to share First Nations stories with Indian audiences through art and design.”

This historic evening will also feature traditional music and dance performances by First Nations artists, enriching the event with vibrant cultural expressions.
