In a pivotal move, President Donald Trump has announced the temporary suspension of “Project Freedom,” a military initiative established to escort vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, motivated by reported advances in negotiations with Iran. This development occurred just a day after the project commenced, highlighting the changing dynamics in U.S.-Iran relations.
On Tuesday, Trump shared a message on Truth Social asserting, “Great progress has been made toward a complete and final agreement with representatives of Iran.” He emphasized that, following requests from Pakistan and other nations, the decision to pause Project Freedom reflects both the ongoing military success against Iran and the hope to finalize an accord.
Despite the pause, Trump confirmed that a blockade on Iran will remain in place. “While the Blockade will remain in full force and effect, Project Freedom… will be paused for a short period of time to see whether or not the Agreement can be finalized and signed,” he stated.
Launched on Monday, Project Freedom initially aimed to provide safe passage for ships that had been stranded due to rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway crucial for global oil transport. Following Trump’s announcement on Sunday, the U.S. Central Command promptly initiated operations to ensure the safety of commercial vessels.
Project Freedom, however, sparked concerns of heightened confrontations in the region. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) alleged that its vessels had been targeted in hostile actions by Iran, while U.S. forces reported the destruction of several Iranian small boats.

Rubio noted that the military objectives of this operation have been realized, stating, “We achieved the objectives of that operation. We’re not cheering for an additional situation to occur. We would prefer the path of peace.”
Rubio further elaborated on Project Freedom, indicating that its mission focused on rescuing approximately 23,000 civilians trapped within the Persian Gulf, left vulnerable by the actions of the Iranian regime. “This is not an offensive operation. This is a defensive operation… there’s no shooting unless we’re shot at first,” Rubio explained. He emphasized the necessity of responding to attacks effectively without initiating aggression.
