Indian batsman KL Rahul expressed his admiration for the Galle pitch following India’s impressive 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test on Monday. Rahul described the match as a “great Test match” and praised how the pitch supported both batters and bowlers over five days.
India’s triumph gives them a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series, with all-rounder Manav Suthar stealing the show. In just his second Test, Suthar showcased his talent with a remarkable 10-wicket haul, earning himself accolades. Earlier in the match, Devdutt Padikkal’s spectacular score of 167 played a crucial role in establishing a strong position for India, earning him the Player of the Match award.
Post-match, KL Rahul spoke highly of the Galle surface, stating it produced a competitive and fair contest. He noted that it catered to spinners while allowing determined batsmen to score runs. He cited Sonal Dinusha’s performance as exemplary; despite Sri Lanka’s loss, Dinusha scored 100 in the first innings and contributed a solid 84 in the second.
Rahul emphasized how the pitch presented opportunities for both pace and spin bowlers, contributing to making it a perfect Test match scenario.
“I think it was a great Test match. The wicket played really well throughout the five days. Spinners found assistance, yet batters who committed to their plans could also score runs. Dinusha batted beautifully, executing his strategy effectively against the spinners. We witnessed how both fast bowlers and spinners found success,” KL Rahul mentioned.
Interestingly, as India celebrated their victory, rain began to fall in Galle. Rahul indicated that the team felt relieved to secure their win ahead of the impending showers. He emphasized their strategy to break crucial partnerships, particularly the pairing of Keshara Nuwantha and Dinusha, which bolstered their confidence to dismiss Sri Lanka’s lower order.
“We were honestly relieved! We kept an eye on the clouds and anticipated a heavy shower. Our focus was on taking quick wickets to avoid any delays. Their partnership had put us under pressure, but once we broke it, we regained confidence to finish the game,” he explained.
India’s decisive victory came after bowling Sri Lanka out for 206 while defending a target of 372. Manav Suthar emerged as the standout player, achieving figures of 6/55 in the second innings, marking his first 10-wicket haul in just his second Test.
On Day 5, Sri Lanka began their innings at 84 for the loss of four wickets, with Dinusha combining with Dhananjaya de Silva for a commendable resistance. The duo added 95 runs before Jadeja sent Dhananjaya packing for 59. Dinusha continued his fight, but Suthar turned the tide by taking three crucial wickets in the 76th over, ultimately dismissing Nuwantha to seal the match.
In their first innings, India scored 464, with notable contributions from Padikkal and KL Rahul, who scored 82. Sri Lanka responded with a total of 284, anchored by Dinusha’s century. India then collapsed to 193 in their second innings, setting Sri Lanka a daunting target of 372 runs.
