Hyderabad Cybercrime Police arrested a 30-year-old software employee for allegedly creating a fake Instagram account and posting abusive, defamatory, and sexually explicit comments targeting a woman.
The accused, a resident of Kachiguda, reportedly set out to malign a Hyderabad-based woman, who holds a politically exposed position. Deputy Commissioner of Police, V Aravind Babu, revealed that the incident began in October 2025 when the accused used the fabricated account to post objectionable comments on a video that featured the complainant.
The original video surfaced on the ‘Pura Local’ Instagram channel and subsequently spread across various social media platforms.
Upon receiving the woman’s complaint, authorities registered a case under Sections 66(D) and 67 of the Information Technology Act, as well as Sections 79 and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). This underscores the seriousness with which the law treats online harassment in India.
Officials stated that the accused created the fake profile to shield his identity while disseminating offensive content intended to harass and defame the woman. Law enforcement seized one mobile phone from his possession, linking him to the crime.
In an effort to combat online harassment, police officials urged the public to take preventive measures. They advised individuals to capture screenshots of abusive profiles, comments, and timestamps before blocking or reporting such accounts, as this information can serve as critical evidence in investigations.
The cybercrime unit further emphasized the importance of verifying unknown social media accounts. They urged digital users to refrain from sharing or commenting on unverified or inflammatory content to mitigate risks associated with cyberbullying and online defamation.

It serves as a reminder of the risks women face online and the necessity of robust measures to combat digital defamation.
