National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Monday hailed the Jammu and Kashmir government’s efforts to rejuvenate tourism following the tragic attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, mainly tourists. Abdullah welcomed the reopening of multiple tourist destinations, viewing it as a positive step for the region.
Speaking on the occasion of World Tourism Day celebrated on September 27, Abdullah expressed warm greetings to the local residents and global admirers of Jammu and Kashmir’s unparalleled beauty and cultural richness. He stressed that tourism in the region serves not only as an economic lifeline but also as a vital aspect of its social fabric.
“As the world acknowledges the significance of tourism, it presents an opportunity for the people of Jammu and Kashmir to reflect and renew their commitment to this vital sector,” he remarked, highlighting the close link between tourism and community livelihood.
Abdullah commended the effective response of the Omar Abdullah-led government in restoring tourist confidence after the Pahalgam incident. He asserted that the administration’s quick and efficient measures helped reaffirm the region’s reputation as a safe and inviting destination.
“These initiatives lay the groundwork for sustainable tourism growth, which ensures the protection of the environment and preservation of our local culture,” said Abdullah.
The Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, recently ordered the reopening of several tourist sites across Jammu and Kashmir that had been shuttered following the attack. This decision marks a significant move towards revitalizing the local tourism sector.
Additionally, Abdullah emphasized the need for inclusive development, urging the government to pay equal attention to underrepresented regions like Chenab and Pir Panjal to enhance overall tourism growth.
As Jammu and Kashmir gears up to welcome visitors once again, Abdullah’s vision extends beyond immediate revival. He called for sustainable tourism models that not only cater to economic demands but also protect the region’s natural landscapes and enrich its cultural heritage.
“Let this World Tourism Day serve as a reminder of our collective responsibility. We must strive to create a peaceful, progressive, and hospitable Jammu and Kashmir, where every tourist feels cherished, and every resident reaps the benefits of tourism-led growth,” he added, appealing for a united effort towards a stronger tourism sector.
