Congress Urges Government to Address Ladakh’s Aspirations Promptly

The Congress party has called on the Indian government to urgently address the legitimate aspirations of the people of Ladakh following violent protests that erupted demanding statehood. The unrest reflects deep-seated distress among the residents, sparking calls for swift action rather than continued discussions.

On Friday, Congress general secretary in-charge communications, Jairam Ramesh, emphasized the need for the government to fulfill the expectations of Ladakhis since the Union Territory was formed six years ago. Ramesh described the current sentiment in Ladakh as one of significant disappointment and disenchantment.

“The distress and anguish of the people of Ladakh must awaken the government’s conscience,” Ramesh stated, underscoring that citizens expected more than just superficial talk from their leaders. They hope for genuine progress in addressing their demands for protection under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and for the establishment of an elected legislature.

The outbreak of violence during the protests on Wednesday resulted in four deaths and over 90 injuries, creating a tense situation that required a strict curfew to be enforced in Leh town. The protests were organized by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) to advocate for their rights.

Ramesh pointed out that people feel their land and employment rights are under severe threat, with local governance increasingly controlled by bureaucratic entities rather than their own elected representatives. This lack of local autonomy has led to considerable frustration among the populace.

The party also highlighted broader geopolitical concerns affecting Ladakh. Ramesh criticized the government’s response to China’s actions along the Line of Actual Control, noting the uncertainty it has created for Ladakh’s stability.

“Ladakh holds profound cultural, economic, ecological, and strategic importance to India,” Ramesh emphasized, urging the government to see the pride and patriotism of the people of Ladakh. He called for immediate action to meet their long-standing demands.

As authorities detain approximately 50 individuals linked to the violence that disrupted Wednesday’s protests, an uneasy calm hangs over the region. Locals hope that continued advocacy will eventually lead to the fulfillment of their demands, restoring their rights and voice in governance.
