CM Omar Abdullah Welcomes US Ambassador, Rejects Foreign Intervention

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Wednesday, expressing his readiness to interact with him during the high-profile visit to Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah emphasized that issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir remain strictly domestic and that he intends to discuss local governance and developmental challenges with the ambassador.

“After a long time, a US Ambassador is visiting Jammu & Kashmir. We will speak with him. I would like to hear him,” Abdullah stated, indicating a willingness to engage in dialogue but firmly setting boundaries.

In response to queries about potential foreign intervention, the Chief Minister clearly articulated that external entities should not influence local matters. “Our problems are not his concern. It is not my habit to complain about our issues to the ambassador of another country. Our problems will not be resolved by Washington but by our own government. I will speak to him about Jammu & Kashmir,” Abdullah added.

Abdullah also addressed pressing civic issues affecting the region’s residents, particularly waterlogging in Srinagar. He acknowledged that the city faces long-standing infrastructural challenges that require immediate attention.

“Waterlogging in parts of Srinagar is a legacy issue. It’s not the creation of the last two years or even the last five years. Neither you nor I know who gave permission to build colonies without providing drainage. Now, retrospectively, we are creating drainage in these colonies,” he explained, highlighting measures the government is taking to mitigate these issues.

According to Abdullah, local authorities are actively identifying problematic areas. “When we receive warnings from the Met Department, we arrange additional pumpage,” he stated, outlining the government’s proactive approach to handling flooding issues. The Chief Minister’s emphasis on localized solutions resonates with the residents, addressing their concerns while reaffirming the importance of self-reliance in governance.

This visit marks a significant moment in diplomatic relations as the US seeks to re-establish connections in the region, but Abdullah’s stance clarifies that autonomy and local governance remain paramount for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The interaction reflects a nuanced approach towards balancing international diplomacy with a steadfast commitment to regional integrity.
