Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir: In a tragic incident, a lightning strike in the Chatroo subdivision of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district has claimed the life of a Bakerwal herder and caused significant loss to his flock of sheep. The deceased has been identified as Azad Ahmed, son of Mahwali,
According to information received, the unfortunate incident occurred on Tuesday evening in the Chatroo area during a spell of inclement weather accompanied by thunder and lightning. Azad Ahmed was reportedly with his flock of sheep in a grazing area when he was suddenly struck by lightning.
Local residents and eyewitnesses reported that Azad Ahmed died on the spot due to the lightning strike. In addition, several of his sheep were also killed or severely injured by the lightning. This incident has sent a wave of grief through the Bakerwal community, as Azad Ahmed was the sole breadwinner for his family, and his flock of sheep was their primary source of livelihood.
Upon receiving information about the incident, local administration and police reached the spot. The police have taken custody of the deceased’s body for post-mortem examination. Furthermore, the Animal Husbandry Department has been informed to assess the extent of the damage.
The Bakerwal community, who primarily lead a nomadic life and migrate with their sheep flocks to high mountains and pastures, are often vulnerable to such natural calamities. This incident has once again highlighted the need for measures to ensure the safety of these communities and protect them from natural disasters. The local administration has assured the affected family of all possible assistance.
