The Minister for Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma, met with the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, in New Delhi today to discuss the pressing need for improved sports infrastructure and wider youth engagement in Jammu and Kashmir.
Sharma presented a comprehensive memorandum that underscored the J&K Government’s resolve to transform the Union Territory into a premier hub for sports and youth empowerment.
The memorandum outlined crucial proposals focusing on infrastructure development, athlete welfare, and grassroots participation, aligning with the National Sports Policy 2025 and the J&K Sports Policy 2022.
During the discussion, Sharma urged the Union Government to support several initiatives aimed at developing world-class sports facilities. This includes establishing the National Winter Sports Centre of Excellence at Gulmarg, modernizing district stadiums with state-of-the-art all-weather facilities, and creating sports amenities at the panchayat level to ensure rural youth have equitable access.
Sharma also advocated for the expansion of Khelo India grassroots programs, as well as enhancements in scholarship and financial aid for aspiring athletes. He emphasized the importance of integrating sports science and physiotherapy into training systems and promoting public-private partnerships (PPP) to manage sports infrastructure efficiently.
To bolster sports-linked tourism and provide global exposure to local athletes, Sharma proposed hosting international winter sports events in Gulmarg. This initiative aims to position Jammu & Kashmir as a go-to destination for adventure and winter sports enthusiasts.
Additionally, the Minister requested an early release of ₹103.82 crore under the Khelo India scheme to expedite the completion of essential sports infrastructure projects.
Responding to Sharma’s proposals, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya assured that a dedicated policy for promoting rural sports would soon be developed. He also confirmed that funds for sports equipment would be allocated to support ongoing and upcoming initiatives, reflecting a commitment to enhancing sporting opportunities in the region.
