India’s UN representative Petal Gahlot stated that Pakistan’s military pleaded for a halt to fighting during Operation Sindoor, and emphasized that no third party can intervene in India-Pakistan matters. This revelation came on September 27 following an address by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to the UN General Assembly (UNGA), where he credited former President Donald Trump with averting war between the two nations.
Gahlot criticized Sharif’s remarks at the UNGA, labeling them as absurd theatrics that glorified terrorism—an element prevalent in Pakistan’s foreign policy. During Sharif’s speech, he expressed Pakistan’s readiness for “comprehensive, result-oriented” dialogue with India on all outstanding issues, while simultaneously condemning India’s stance on the Kashmir situation.
Furthermore, Sharif praised Trump’s efforts, stating, “In recognition of President Trump’s wonderful contribution to promote peace in our part of the world, Pakistan nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize.” He described Trump as “truly a man of peace” for his role in fostering dialogue.
Operation Sindoor, which commenced on May 7, marked India’s response to the devastating Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 that cost the lives of 26 civilians. In this operation, Indian forces targeted terrorist infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
India maintains that the cessation of hostilities was established through direct communications between the Directors General of Military Operations from both countries. By reiterating this point, India aims to underline its commitment to integrated dialogue, while also reflecting on the pressing threats faced from terrorism.
The exchange of statements at the UNGA marks a critical moment in India-Pakistan relations. While both countries have claimed readiness to engage in dialogue, the juxtaposition of diplomacy and military actions reveals the complexity of their interactions.
As the international community watches, the need for effective dialogue grows ever more pressing, especially considering the ongoing tensions in the region. The current geopolitical landscape necessitates not just effective communication, but an earnest effort from both sides to reduce hostilities.
The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected as India consistently emphasizes a zero-tolerance approach toward terrorism originating from Pakistan. This commitment illustrates India’s broader strategic objective of maintaining peace while navigating a complicated security environment.
