The Alert News (Baber Farooq)

Kishtwar, January 13: The National Highway 244 (NH244), connecting Kishtwar to Kashmir via Sinthan Top, will reopen for light vehicle movement starting tomorrow, according to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). The highway had been closed due to snow accumulation and adverse weather conditions.
The reopening will bring relief to residents and travelers; however, traffic will operate on an alternate-day schedule for safety reasons. As per the advisory issued by Sub-Divisional Magistrate Chatroo, light vehicles can travel from Kashmir to Sinthan Top tomorrow between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Movement from Sinthan Top to Kashmir will be permitted the day after tomorrow during the same time window.

The SDM has directed strict enforcement of traffic guidelines. Law enforcement officers, including the SHO Chatroo, will monitor compliance at checkpoints, and violators will face strict action. Drivers are urged to exercise caution due to slippery road conditions caused by snow and freezing temperatures. The administration advises carrying essential supplies such as warm clothing, food, water, and a medical kit, driving at low speeds, and adhering to the traffic schedule to avoid congestion and ensure safety.

SDM Chatroo emphasized that commuter safety is a top priority, stating, “The reopening of the Kishtwar-Sinthan highway is crucial for maintaining connectivity, especially for residents of remote areas and travelers. We request public cooperation in adhering to the guidelines to ensure smooth operations and prevent mishaps.”

Further updates on traffic movement will depend on weather conditions, with the highway under close observation. The NH244 serves as a vital link for locals and a draw for tourists, offering breathtaking views of Sinthan Top. The administration has committed to maintaining the route while prioritizing public safety.
