Ladakh Unrest: Curfew Continues in Leh Amid Protests

Curfew continues to grip Leh town for the third straight day as the Union Home Ministry assesses the security situation amid growing unrest. The curfew, first imposed on Wednesday evening, follows widespread protests that unfortunately claimed four lives and left over ninety individuals injured. The protests were organized by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) to demand statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Authorities confirmed that no serious incidents occurred during the ongoing curfew, which highlights the effectiveness of security measures implemented in the region. Despite the restrictions, the situation in most areas of Ladakh has remained calm. Officials indicated that they might relax curfew measures later today to facilitate essential activities.

As law enforcement works to maintain order, over fifty individuals have been detained in connection with the protests. Police and paramilitary forces are patrolling the streets diligently to prevent any disturbances. Romil Singh, the District Magistrate of Leh, has announced the closure of all government and private educational institutions for two days starting Friday, to ensure safety.

A pivotal meeting took place with a high-level team from the Ministry of Home Affairs visiting Leh to evaluate the emerging situation. This team aims to ensure a comprehensive understanding of local grievances while implementing necessary security measures.

Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor, Kavinder Gupta, addressed the concerns of residents, stating, “The videos being circulated are deliberate attempts to disturb peace in Ladakh. We cannot allow the future of our youth to be compromised. Any such incidents will be dealt with under a zero-tolerance policy.” His comments underscore the administration’s commitment to maintaining order amidst rising tensions.

As the unrest continues, community leaders urge dialogue between locals and the government to resolve the ongoing crisis. The demands for statehood resonate deeply within the local population, many of whom feel marginalized. Local citizens express fear for their safety yet hope for a peaceful resolution that considers their aspirations. The situation remains fluid, and many residents are looking for clarity and assurance from authorities.
