Minister for Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmed Rana, called for a unified approach to preserve tribal heritage during the Tribal Mela, held today in Sagra, Mendhar (Poonch). Emphasizing the importance of maintaining tribal values, Rana remarked that development must not jeopardize the distinct cultural identity of communities in the Pir Panjal region.
Speaking at the vibrant event organized in collaboration with the District Administration, the minister pointed out that unchecked modernization could lead to a significant loss of tribal customs and moral frameworks. He stated, “We need to ensure that while we progress, we also cherish and protect our traditions.” This integrative approach underscores the necessity of finding a balance between development and cultural preservation.
Rana reiterated the commitment of the Omar Abdullah Government to foster inclusive development that nurtures a resilient, self-reliant tribal society. He commended the efforts made by the Tribal Affairs Department and local administration in organizing the mela, which he described as a meaningful step towards development with dignity. “Strengthening our cultural roots fosters a more sustainable society,” he added.
The Tribal Mela drew significant crowds and was a celebration of rich tribal heritage, food, and traditional wisdom. Stalls featured a variety of indigenous cuisines, showcased innovative medicinal plants, and offered insights into efficient healthcare knowledge systems. A notable highlight of the event was a free medical camp providing essential consultations and services to attendees.
This year’s event not only spotlighted the uniqueness of tribal culture but also reinforced the government’s pledge to ensure that development policies remain grounded in the lived realities of tribal communities. By prioritizing cultural preservation, the government aims to concurrently uplift these communities while honoring their distinct legacies.
Alongside Minister Rana, the event saw attendance from Chairperson DDC Poonch Tazeem Akhtar, Deputy Commissioner Poonch Ashok Kumar Sharma, and senior officials, as well as a large number of enthusiastic locals. Their presence further manifested the community’s support for a vision of progress that embraces its rich cultural heritage.
