A cloudburst in the Chasoti village of Paddar, Kishtwar, on Thursday, August 14, 2025, has caused widespread devastation. As of August 16, the death toll has risen to 51, with over 100 people injured and at least 86 still missing. 💔
The Incident
The tragedy struck between noon and 1 p.m. when a massive cloudburst triggered flash floods and landslides. The area, located at an altitude of 9,500 feet, is a key stop for pilgrims on the annual Machail Mata Yatra. A community kitchen (langar) set up for the devotees was hit particularly hard, with many of the victims being pilgrims. The flash floods swept away people, makeshift shelters, and sections of the mountain path.
The Response
Rescue operations are currently underway, involving teams from the Army, NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), SDRF (State Disaster Response Force), police, and local volunteers. The remote and rugged terrain, along with poor mobile connectivity, has hindered rescue efforts. Authorities have set up a control room and help desk to assist those affected. The Jammu and Kashmir government has also suspended the annual Machail Mata Yatra.
The Impact
The disaster has caused extensive damage beyond the loss of life. At least 10 houses, three temples, and multiple government offices were damaged or destroyed. A 30-meter-long bridge was also washed away, and many vehicles were damaged. Authorities fear the death toll could rise as rescue teams continue to search for the missing.
