India Upgrades Kabul Mission to Embassy; Jaishankar Commends Taliban

India announced on Friday its upgrade of the technical mission in Kabul to a full-fledged embassy, strengthening diplomatic ties with Afghanistan. This pivotal decision came during a meeting between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi.

Following the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021, India withdrew all its diplomatic personnel from Kabul. In a move to maintain some level of engagement, a technical team redeployed in June 2022 facilitated limited operations. The current upgrade underscores India’s commitment to re-establish vital diplomatic engagement focused on humanitarian aid, infrastructure development, and regional security cooperation.

“Your visit marks an important step in advancing our ties and affirming the enduring friendship between India and Afghanistan,” Jaishankar stated in his initial remarks. He emphasized India’s deep interest in the development of Afghanistan, identifying it as a contiguous neighbour and a well-wisher of the Afghan populace.

He further noted that India’s long-standing partnership had seen various successful projects in Afghanistan and celebrated the renewed commitment. Jaishankar commended the Taliban administration for demonstrating “sensitivity towards India’s security concerns,” especially following the Pahalgam terror attack.

Jaishankar articulated the collaborative focus on combating cross-border terrorism, stressing that both nations share a common commitment to growth, stability, and prosperity amidst ongoing regional challenges. “We must coordinate efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” he remarked.

Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi lauded India as a pivotal regional ally, highlighting India’s continuous support for the Afghan people. He acknowledged the significance of India’s humanitarian assistance and reaffirmed Kabul’s desire to expand bilateral cooperation in sectors such as trade, infrastructure, and education.

The upgrade of India’s diplomatic mission in Kabul reflects New Delhi’s careful yet strategic re-engagement with the Taliban-led government, motivated by the need for security, regional stability, and enduring relationships with the Afghan people. As India positions itself to enhance involvement in Afghanistan, the move signifies a renewed zeal toward fostering significant international relations in a complex geopolitical landscape.
