Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu Awarded Vir Chakra for Gallantry

Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter pilot Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu has been awarded the Vir Chakra, one of India’s highest wartime gallantry awards, for his exemplary courage during Operation Sindoor in May. The award reflects his remarkable leadership and skill in a challenging operational environment.

The official citation, published in the Government Gazette on October 4, praises Group Captain Sidhu’s bravery as he executed multiple deep-penetration strike missions. Despite encountering complex threats and robust air defences, he demonstrated surgical precision in striking designated targets.

During the four-day military engagement between India and Pakistan, his squadron successfully operated in hostile airspace using state-of-the-art fighter aircraft. Each member of the squadron achieved their assigned objectives under extremely difficult conditions.

According to the citation, Group Captain Sidhu “exhibited exceptional acts of gallantry, resolute leadership, and unwavering dedication” as he led operations from three different strategic locations along the Western sector. He made “dynamic, real-time decisions” to counter evolving threats, ensuring both mission success and the safety of his fellow airmen.

His command significantly enhanced the IAF’s offensive posture during these critical operations, providing a strategic advantage against enemy formations.

Nine IAF pilots who partook in precision strikes on enemy installations during Operation Sindoor received the Vir Chakra, India’s third-highest wartime honour. This operation commenced following the Pahalgam terror attack, highlighting the IAF’s ability to respond decisively to such threats.

Other notable awards went to Group Captains Manish Arora, Animesh Patni, and Kunal Kalra. Group Captain Arora received accolades for his leadership during an unescorted strike mission through heavily defended airspace. His ability to execute low-level night manoeuvres under the threat of radar and missile attacks demonstrated his exceptional capabilities.

Additionally, Squadron Leader Rizwan Malik was awarded for his tactical ingenuity and audacious operations that disrupted enemy formations, showcasing the depth of skill within the IAF.

On the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu approved a total of 127 gallantry awards and 40 distinguished service awards, underscoring the contributions of armed forces personnel.
