Dr. Jitendra Singh Reviews IMD’s Multi-Hazard Early Warning DSS

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh, reviewed the India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s innovative Multi-Hazard Early Warning Decision Support System (DSS) during his visit today, highlighting a significant cost saving of ₹250 crore.

This indigenous initiative strengthens disaster preparedness and public safety across India. Dr. Singh praised IMD for developing a self-reliant and technology-driven forecasting platform that enhances operational efficiency. The DSS reduces dependency on foreign vendors, saving an additional ₹5.5 crore in annual maintenance costs, perfectly aligning with the government’s vision of “Atmanirbhar Bharat”.

In his visit, Dr. Singh explored the features of “Mausamgram” (Har Har Mausam, Har Ghar Mausam), a citizen-centric weather information platform. It provides hyperlocal weather forecasts, offering hourly updates for 36 hours, three-hourly predictions for 5 days, and six-hourly insights for up to 10 days. Users can conveniently access these forecasts by searching via PIN code or location, ensuring comprehensive coverage available in all official Indian languages.

The IMD has also revamped its forecasting processes, increasing lead times from 5 to 7 days. This enhancement slashes forecast preparation time by three hours and boosts accuracy by 15–20%, demonstrating IMD’s commitment to advancing public safety.

During the review, Dr. Singh encouraged IMD officials to integrate AI-based tools into “Mausamgram”. He expressed hopes for improved interactivity and user experience. The Minister called for a more effective Multi-Hazard Early Warning System to deliver clear and actionable alerts that facilitate timely disaster responses.

Dr. Singh commended the IMD team’s excellence, recently recognized with the National Award for e-Governance 2025. This award was presented at the 28th National Conference on e-Governance held in Visakhapatnam, validating IMD’s achievements in digital public service delivery.

Furthermore, under the Special Swachhata Program, the IMD generated ₹30 lakh from the disposal of e-waste and old files while clearing away 600 square meters of space. The Minister actively participated in the “Special Swachhata Program 5.0” at IMD’s headquarters, Mausam Bhavan, where he planted a sapling as part of the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative and recognized 50 “Safai Mitras” for their dedication to cleanliness.

Looking ahead, Dr. Singh shared insights into Mission Mausam. By 2030, the project aims to enhance IMD’s forecasting capabilities with the installation of advanced meteorological instruments. This development includes 5×5 km-scale hazard forecasting, dynamic impact-based forecasting, and risk-based early warnings. Mission Mausam aspires to ensure that early warnings reach every household, fulfilling the vision of “Har Har Mausam, Har Ghar Mausam.”
