GMC Doda NICU Successfully Manages Heaviest Newborn Ever

In a major milestone for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully treated and discharged a newborn weighing an astounding 6 kilograms at birth. This delivery ranks as one of the heaviest babies ever recorded at this establishment.

The baby, born on 25th October 2025 at 1:20 PM, entered the world to a diabetic mother who experienced complications during delivery. Within the first 30 minutes, the infant exhibited severe respiratory distress, prompting immediate admission to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for advanced medical management.

Given the baby’s large-for-gestational-age condition and observed signs of respiratory compromise, medical professionals promptly initiated specialized neonatal respiratory support. The healthcare team closely monitored respiratory efforts, oxygen saturation levels, blood sugar, and neurological status throughout the critical care period.

In the subsequent days, the infant displayed significant improvement, leading to a gradual reduction in respiratory support. The vigilant NICU staff ensured that the baby consistently met key health indicators.

For the final 72 hours leading to the discharge, the infant showed stable independent breathing, with normal oxygenation and body temperature regulation, and no signs of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation episodes. Following sustained clinical stability, the newborn was discharged in a healthy condition, with recommendations for routine follow-up care.

This remarkable achievement is a testament to the expert guidance of Dr. Najmus Saqib, Head of the Pediatrics Department, along with the comprehensive oversight of faculty members Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma. Their leadership, alongside a dedicated team of senior residents and junior residents, proved vital in managing this challenging case.

GMC Doda’s nursing and paramedical staff also deserve special recognition for their vigilant monitoring and compassionate care, which fostered an environment essential for the baby’s recovery. This success reflects the unwavering commitment of the team to provide exemplary care.

The achievement symbolizes the growing neonatal expertise within the Department of Pediatrics at GMC Doda. It highlights their dedication to delivering quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to newborns and children in the region, showcasing the pivotal role that skilled healthcare professionals play in ensuring successful outcomes in critical situations.
