In a significant political move, Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) President Tariq Hameed Karra on Thursday made a compelling demand for a judicial inquiry into the Leh violence of September 24, which resulted in the tragic loss of four lives. He firmly insisted that this impartial investigation should be conducted by a sitting High Court judge, or if that is not feasible, then a retired judge of impeccable integrity should lead the probe.
Karra, while addressing reporters, emphasized the urgency of the inquiry. He stated, “Whatever happened in Leh should not be repeated, but there must be an inquiry. If a sitting High Court judge is not available on fast track, then the probe should be entrusted to a credible retired judge.” His call for accountability underscores the increasing political tensions in the region.
The JKPCC leader also chose to pay homage to the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries, reflecting on their enduring legacy. He noted their leadership, ideology, and commitment to a self-reliant India, asserting that Gandhian philosophy remains relevant and influential, even finding its place in discussions at the United Nations.
In connection with the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, Karra disclosed that decisions regarding seat sharing and potential alliances will be determined by the Congress leadership at the central level. He highlighted that senior party figure Digvijay Singh has been appointed as the observer for this crucial electoral process.
Turning to the matter of Independent legislator Mehraj Malik, Karra voiced his perspective on legislative participation, asserting that Malik should be allowed to attend the Assembly session. “Even Engineer Rashid was allowed to participate in Parliament while lodged in Tihar Jail. By the same analogy, Mehraj Malik should also be allowed,” he argued, pointing to precedents in parliamentary practice.
