Defence Minister Rajnath Singh declared the MiG-21 a symbol of national pride and a testament to the strong ties between India and Russia during a decommissioning ceremony at Chandigarh Air Force Station on Friday. The MiG-21, a remarkable aircraft with a legacy over 60 years, has significantly contributed to the nation’s security and military strategy.
The MiG-21 fighter jets, the backbone of the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) combat fleet, completed their final operational flights on Friday, closing a distinguished chapter in Indian aviation. Having served since the 1960s, the MiG-21 has been a pivotal asset in various conflicts and military operations.
Speaking at the gathering, Singh emphasized the aircraft’s vital role in shaping the armed forces’ confidence and bolstering national security. “We gather here for the final operational sortie of the MiG-21. I feel pride and gratitude,” he said, reflecting on the accomplishments of the aircraft.
Singh asserted that the MiG-21 is not merely a machine. “It is proof of deep ties between India and Russia,” he noted.
