DRDO Launches Agni-Prime Missile: A Major Defence Milestone

The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), in conjunction with the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), achieved a significant milestone by successfully launching the Intermediate Range Agni-Prime Missile. This launch took place on March 8, 2023, from a rail-based mobile launcher system, showcasing India’s advanced defence capabilities.

The Agni-Prime missile, capable of striking targets up to 2,000 km away, features cutting-edge technology designed to enhance its operational effectiveness. According to a Defence Ministry statement, this next-generation missile incorporates a range of sophisticated capabilities.

The first-of-its-kind launch occurred from a specially designed rail-based mobile launcher that can seamlessly operate across the rail network without any pre-conditions, offering exceptional cross-country mobility. With the ability to launch in a short reaction time while maintaining reduced visibility, this system significantly enhances India’s strategic deterrence.

The missile’s flight trajectory was monitored and confirmed by various ground systems, ensuring that the launch fulfilled all pre-defined mission objectives. This successful test not only validates the missile’s capabilities but also paves the way for the future induction of rail-based systems into the armed forces.

Senior DRDO scientists and officers from the Strategic Forces Command were present to witness the historic event. The Agni-Prime missile joins its road-mobile counterpart, Agni-P, which had already been successfully inducted into the services after a series of flight trials.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh extended his congratulations to the DRDO, SFC, and the armed forces following the successful test of the Agni-Prime missile. He underscored that this flight test positions India among a select group of nations with the capability to deploy canisterised launch systems from a rail network.

In a post on social media platform X, Singh emphasized the significance of the Agni-Prime missile’s capabilities, stating, “This next-generation missile can cover a range of up to 2,000 km and is equipped with various advanced features. The launch from a rail-based mobile system enables cross-country mobility, thus enhancing our strategic reach.”

Further expressing his pride in the accomplishment, Singh noted, “This successful flight test places India among a group of select nations that have developed advanced canisterised launch systems deployed on the move from a rail network.”

Secretary of the Department of Defence Research & Development and Chairman of DRDO, Dr. Samir V. Kamat, praised the effort of all teams involved, highlighting the launch as a remarkable success that underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its defence capabilities.
